Whether hiding in a kids playhouse or digging in the dirt that may surround one, just being outside of their regular house is a major deal for little ones. A playhouse is a perfect setting for families to introduce their child to the outdoors, thus providing their children with the opportunity to want to learn more about the fascinating aspects of nature. To encourage your child to have more interaction with the flora and fauna that liven up our world, here are a few ways to make this happen:

1. With your child, choose and plant a tree! Your child may want to create a landscape for the area surrounding their kids playhouse. A super way to do this is to actually creat a landscape design and then choose and plant trees, seeds, and bulbs. A child can learn the value of nature in regards to the food chain while doing this activity. During outdoor play, your child may want to tend to the baby tree, seedlings or bulbs that were recently planted. This will be a perfect chance for your child to learn to care for the earth.

2. Always be sure to “bug” them! There are all types of science toys and tools that can be used to learn about the fascinating world of insects. You may want to invite some six legged "friends" into the kids playhouse where your child can elect to do thier own research. Have an area for books on insects and a spot to display insect collections. This will work even if the insects are dead! Insects serve our world in a number of ways including their pollination activities. Children may be surprised to learn that some of the foods that they eat are made better because of bugs!

3. Catch the breeze…and the rain! With a few minor add ons, your kids playhouse can become a weather station. The topic of weather is interesting to many kids. Several tools that are extremely useful for any child interested in learning more about weather inluclude: a video camera to capture the shifts in rain and wind movements, a weather vane for wind pattern monitoring, a weather journal for illustrating or charting weather on a daily basis, and a rain guage to measure the amount of precipitation and then using the gathered water for watering plants.

Your child’s wooden kids playhouse is more than just a toy hut or place for frolicking. It can be an amazing nature center for teaching your child about the outdoors, animals, insects, and weather.
