I have very great healthy Hydrangia foliage but without flowers.  Why?

First thing you need to determine is what kind of hydrangea you have. here are some of the common reasons that hydrangea fails to flourish:

1. lots of shade-all grow in partial shade but too reduce or eliminate the flower.
2. too much nitrogen fertiliser-also will promote healthy green leaves at the expense of flowers.
3. Winter damage-if you live in colder climates, the flower buds may have been damaged. Only soft (h. arborescens) and panicle hydrangea flower (h. paniculata) on new wood; bigleaf hydrangea (h. macrophylla) blooms mainly on old wood (* with the exception of new remotant bloomers) which means they need to define your buds in the current season and make it during the Winter to flourish in the following year.* New cultivars of h. macrophylla, such as Endless Summer, Twist n Shout will flourish in old growth as new growth.
4. Pruning – remember calendar. Pruning judicious is also very important. pruning afternoon will eliminate flower buds of the coming years.If you remove to reduce the time to do so soon after blooming. If you remove the thin post-factory, cutting some of the older rods at ground level in early spring (dormant season).Most hydrangeas grow well with no pruning at all while others, like h. arborescens (Annabelle) and h. paniculata (Pink Diamond) often need to be reduced every year.

When is the best time to cut Hydrangeas?

The best time to prune is early spring flowering and immediately afterwards.It helps to know what kind of Skies that you have to know how to prune.
H. arborescens flowers in new wood, so you can cut it down to 1/2 size or 6? above ground in winter or in early spring. without removing will give smaller flowers and less vigorous growth.
H. paniculata-same as h. arborescens.
H. macrophylla Bigleaf hydrangea-flowers in old wood (except for Endless Summer, Penny Mac and All Summer Beauty) not prune, just to remove irradiated flowers. cut just below the flower head. Any other pruning will reduce the production of flowers for the farther you cut less flowers that you will receive.
H. quercifolia, Oakleaf hydrangea flowers on old wood-prune even as h. macrophylla. Prune in early spring for moulding or thin the plant to the detriment of flowers.
