This article should help you to learn a little more about the process of creating a beautiful garden, and having fun in the process!
Baking Soda
There are home solutions available to combat the powdery mildew you may find on your plants. Put a little baking soda and some dish soap in water. Spray this onto your plants about once per week or until it subsides. Baking soda will effectively remove the mildew without damaging your plants.
When you’re out and about in the garden, particularly in the fall, keep an eye out for sink bugs. This insect will gladly devour your tomatoes, beans, and peppers, as well as a variety of other fruits. If you don’t treat them, they can do a lot of damage in your garden.
As fall arrives, it is the time to prepare for planting fall edibles. Try using a pumpkin as a natural plant pot. You can plant fall vegetables such as lettuce in an empty pumpkin shell. Cut an opening in the top of your pumpkin, scoop out the inside, and spray the entire thing with Wilt-Proof. This will prevent rotting. Once you have completed this, start planting!
Grow some plants that cats like to eat – try catnip or wheat grass. You could also place mothballs and citrus peels around your plants to keep your cat away.
Irises should be divided. The more you divide clusters of irises, the more your irises will multiply. Uproot bulbous irises if the flowers have wilted. The bulbs should split naturally, and the replanted bulbs will usually flower within a year. Rhizomes, however, need to be divided by using a gardening knife. Get rid of the center and keep the new pieces you cut from the outside. Every piece should contain a strong offshoot. The quicker you can replant your cuttings, the better chances they will reappear next season.
Be consistent with garden fertilization. Use commercially composted products in your garden to help your plants grow. This will reduce the chance of pathogens. There are many fertilizer options available, though in reality, whatever type you choose will do the job as long as you are using something.
You can prevent pests using other plants or natural materials. Onions and marigolds can get rid of pests in the garden. Insects can be deterred if you use wood ash instead of mulch around trees and shrub seedlings. These methods remove the need for harsh chemical pesticides.
Place a few inches of organically based mulch around your vegetable plants. Mulch will retain water so that you won’t have to water your plants as often. It will also prevent weeds from popping up around your plants. This will save you a ton of time and work.
Keeping pests out of a vegetable garden can be difficult. Since your vegetables are meant to be eaten, refrain from spraying them with harsh chemicals. Remain vigilant to control your garden pests. If you discover the pests when they first infest your plants, the best way to remove them is to pick them off manually.
Water your garden carefully. A soaker hose will save you time because you won’t have to individually water each plant, like you do with a regular nozzle, or a can that you need to constantly refill. Keep the water running slowly so it doesn’t spray up onto the plants’ leaves. Keep the water turned on for about two hours; while your plants are being watered, you will have time for other activities.
With these tips, you’re better equipped to grow the most beautiful garden you can imagine. In learning how to create your dream garden, you’ll also be growing as a person. That’s because learning how to nurture your plants will not only help you reach the goal of having a great garden, but it will help you learn to nurture yourself.
