Knowing which soil to purchase, which gardening equipment to buy and when to plant your seeds are some of the key questions gardeners are asking. The following article provides answers to many of the questions that are asked by gardeners of all skill levels.
Clay soil can be very hard to work with, and you will often find that it sticks to the shovel. Simplify the process by putting a bit of wax onto the shovel. The clay won’t stick then. The wax prevents the clay from sticking to the shovel, and stops rust from forming.
Plant slug-proof perennials. Slugs and snails can decimate a plant in one night. These pests prefer plants with thin smooth leaves. Plant some helleborus or euphorbias along with your other perennials. Some varieties of perennials are not preferred by snails and slugs, particularly perennials that have hairy, tough leaves or a taste that isn’t appetizing. Several good choices include heuchera, campanula, achillea, and euphorbia.
The approach of fall means you need to start planting autumn goodies. Clay pots are boring, so replace those ordinary lettuce and kale pots with pumpkins. Once you’ve cut its top and scooped the insides out, spray the edges and inside with Wilt-Pruf to prevent rotting. Once you’ve done that, you can plant!
Coffee Grounds
Consider adding coffee grounds to your soil if it contains high levels of alkaline. Coffee grounds are an affordable means of adding acid to the soil so that it is pH-balanced. When you can eliminate excess alkaline from the soil, it makes what you are growing much healthier. This means your veggies will taste better, and your flowers will be more vibrant than ever.
Try “boiling” weeds to get rid of them. The safest herbicide that you can probably find is a cup of boiling water. Literally pour the water on the weeds, avoiding any wanted plants near them, and watch the weeds die over time. Boiling water kills weeds by destroying their roots. Weeds won’t be able to survive, never mind grow, with damaged weeds.
Take the time to spread around five centimeters of organic mulch near your vegetable plants. Mulch is used to keep extra moisture and provide nutrients for your plants. This is also efficient in preventing weeds from growing. You will save time by not pulling weeds.
Take a look at planting berry-producing evergreens in your yard. They offer terrific color during the dreariest times of the year when nothing else you have planted has any hue remaining. Plants which you can purchase that offer color during the winter are the Winterberry, the Common Snowberry, the American Holly, and the American Cranberrybush.
Spray old aftershave, perfume, or scented products around the grass of your garden to prevent your dog from entering it. Your dog will find more interesting scents to explore elsewhere and leave your garden alone.
If you have plants inside, make sure the thermostat stays between 65 and 75 degrees. This level of heat is required in order for plants to grow. You can also buy a heat lamp to maintain ideal conditions for your inside plants during the winter.
Keep your garden tools close at hand to make the most of your horticulture time. You should use a large pail and wear sturdy pants that have several pockets. Make sure your trowel, pruning shears, gloves and other important tools are always handy. This will allow you to make easy work of your gardening up-keep!
Laundry Basket
An old laundry basket makes a great way to gather your harvest. Most laundry baskets are designed with a multitude of holes. This makes them a perfect strainer for washing your vegetables. If you hose off your produce in the laundry basket, the water will leave the basket through the holes in the sides.
When you are growing seedlings in your organic garden, lightly brush over them using your hand up to twice a day. Believe it or not, aerating the soil in this manner can actually make your seedlings grow larger.
Construct raised flower beds of brick, stone, or wood. If you choose wood, it needs to be naturally rot resistant and untreated. Excellent choices are cedar, locust and cypress. Don’t use treated wood in a garden for vegetables because the chemicals contained in them can leak into the ground. If you are already using treated lumber, you can use plastic liners, or a different barrier, in order to protect your garden.
While horticulture organically requires more work than horticulture with the help of chemicals, the rewards are worth it. While chemical companies may make astounding claims about their products, growing organically is the most rewarding option for you and those who consume your crops.
Making a delicious meal with fresh ingredients from your own garden can be extremely satisfying. If you use the advice laid out here and plan accordingly, your garden will bloom gloriously in no time. Remember the tips in this article to have your own beautiful garden.
