Continue on for some good tips that will help you succeed in organic horticulture.
Your tool handles can double as measuring sticks. Larger handled tools like rakes, hoes, and shovels make great measuring sticks. Lay the handles on the floor, then run the measuring tape down next to them. Label the distances onto them using a permanent marker pen. Now you have easy access to a long ruler whenever you are horticulture.
Having healthy soil in your garden is your number one defense against pests! Healthy and well-nourished plants will be hardier and therefore better able to prevent pests from taking hold. Start your garden off with a high-quality soil that you can enrich over time.
Transplanting plants and bringing them indoors can protect them from harsh winters. Choose the plants that are most likely to survive. Use caution when digging around the roots of your plant. You need to keep the root structure intact for it to thrive after being potted.
For a garden that thrives, choose the right type of soil. Depending on what type of plants you have, your soil may or may not be adapted. You can also make an artificial plot with just one type of soil.
Coffee Grounds
If your soil is highly alkaline, try mixing used coffee grounds into the soil. Using coffee grounds is a less expensive way to make your soil more acidic than trying to replace your topsoil. The greens and vegetables need the proper balance and will grow bigger and stronger with the right mix.
Use a plant for a focal point. In a well designed garden you should have a focal point so that your eyes will stay there. In most cases, an original plant makes a good focal point.
Water infused with aspirin is great for combating plant disease. Dissolve aspirin (1.5 pills per 2 gallons of water) in a bucket and administer to your plants. The solution can then be used to spray the entire plant, and will offer protection naturally. Give your plants a spray of the aspirin-water mixture about one time every three weeks.
Do you want to kill weeds naturally? Use a lot of layers of newspaper in order to achieve weed control. Weeds require sunlight for growing. When you put newspaper on top of weeds they will suffocate because they are not getting enough light. Newsprint also breaks down well, incorporating itself into the compost. Add visual appeal by placing some mulch over the top.
Create a raised bed for your garden out of stone, bricks or untreated wood. Choose wood that is naturally resistant to rot and is untreated. Some good choices include locust, cypress, and cedar. Avoid using treated wood in an organic vegetable garden. The chemicals in the wood can leak into the soil, and eventually into the plants. If you have built a bed with treated lumber already, use a barrier such as plastic to line the bed.
Just by doing a few things, you can make a garden for perennials. Dig into the existing turf with a shovel or spade, flip it, and then layer the entire area with wood mulch. In about 2 weeks, you will be able to plant flowers in your new bed.
For the best results when horticulture, the hole you dig for your plants should be very rustic; think jagged, rough and unappealing. If your hole has several “glazed” sides created by the shovel, it could keep roots from penetrating the soil nearby.
If you are mulching your plants, you should use a layer of approximately three inches deep. This method is not only good for the earth, but conserves water, saving you money on your water bill and offering a bit of relief to the environment as well. It can also look great.
The healthier the soil the healthier your plants are, and when they are healthy they become that much more resistant to insects and disease. Although the insects might still be present, you will be able to avoid their damage, which is what makes everyone happy.
You’re probably aware that compost is very beneficial to organic gardens, but are you aware of what goes into it? Most compost is made of clippings of leaves, grass, small twigs, straw and other biodegradable matter. This matter is allowed to ferment into a nutrient rich soil. Compost adds nutrients to your soil without the dangers of commercial fertilizers.
Organic horticulture is a more involved form of horticulture than is often realized. With hard work and patience, you will be happy with the end result–a fabulous organic garden. Use this information and you will be in great shape for bettering yourself in terms of organic gardening knowledge.
