Newcomers to organic gardening, however, can easily find themselves overwhelmed. How then should someone who does not have any experience start getting involved with organic horticulture? Well, read the tips below, of course!
Shoveling clay soil is tiresome since clay is hard, and it can also stick to your shovel for twice the difficulty. Coat the shovel with floor or car wax, and buff it with a clean rag to make the job a lot easier. Not only will the clay slide off the surface, but it will keep the end from rusting.
The handles of your tools can double as clever rulers. You can convert any large handle tool, such as a hoe, shovel, or rake into a measuring tool. After laying the handles on the floor, run the measuring tape along beside them. Use a bright permanent marker and label the distances. Next time you work in the garden, you can have a larger ruler with you!
Use slug-proof varieties of perennials wherever possible. Snails and slugs can destroy plants in just one night. Young plants with smooth and tender leaves are their favorite. Perennials that are unappetizing in taste, or that have hardened and hairy leaves, are not a favorite of slugs or snails. Some perennial families that snails and slugs won’t eat include achillea, campanula, and helleborus.
Flower Bed
Use both biennials and annuals to add color to your flower bed. These fast growing flowers let you change how your flower bed looks season to season. They are very helpful when trying to fill in gaps between shrubs and perennials in an area that is sunny. Notable biennials and annuals include marigold, sunflowers, hollyhock, petunia, and cosmos.
If you’re planning on gardening, carefully watch for stink bugs! You should be particularly careful during Autumn. They thrive on fruits, citrus, peppers and various beans. If you do not keep them under control, the damage can be excessive, so keep an eye out for them.
Use bulbs to ensure continuous flowers throughout the spring and summer. A hardy perennial addition to your garden, bulbs will continue to delight every year. If you choose your plants carefully, you could have flowers in blossom from the first weeks of spring to the end of the summer.
Protect your tender deciduous shrubs. Shrubs in pots especially need special care in the colder weather. The tops should be tied together, and the wigwam should be loosely covered with a sheet or blanket. This is more effective than putting plastic on the plant, it will let the air flow.
Get a wheelbarrow, and a stool so that you can kneel down while gardening. Working on the ground for long periods of time can be painful on the knees, so a small garden stool can really allow you to work in comfort. Gardeners usually need a wheelbarrow to move the heavy dirt and other objects so they are a good item to buy.
Know the ideal times to harvest each of the vegetables you plant. Different vegetables have different, ideal times that they should be picked for best flavor. Many vegetables are best when picked young; baby peas are a prime example. However, you get better taste out of tomatoes that have been allowed to ripen as much as practical while still on their vine. Educate yourself about the best time to harvest your veggies.
If you have problems keeping the dog out of the garden, spray things like aftershave, perfume or other scents on the grass surrounding the garden. This will mask any scents that might attract your dog and make your garden less interesting to him.
Allow your children to assist with the work to be done in your organic garden. The benefits for your children will be a closer bond with nature and an understanding of where food comes from.
Now you can see how organic horticulture is so enjoyable. It is quite calming and relaxing to immerse oneself in the rhythms of organic gardening. Using the advice you have read in this article, you can learn to garden organically like a pro.
