You will need to take closer care of your garden if you choose to grow organically, but there are many tools to help you. If you are new to growing vegetables, then growing organic may take you a bit more time to learn. You won’t be a beginner for long if you put the tips you are about to learn to use.
Clay Soil
Shoveling clay soil is tiresome since clay is hard, and it can also stick to your shovel for twice the difficulty. Rub a thin layer of floor or car wax over the surface of the shovel, and then buff the surface using a clean cloth. This will make shoveling in clay soil easier. The wax will enable the clay soil to simply slide off the shovel, and will also prevent the shovel from rusting.
Starting off your garden with healthy soil can be the best defense against those pesky garden bugs. Healthy plants can better ward off pests and diseases. To increase your garden’s likelihood of producing strong and healthy plants, use high-quality soil containing minuscule amounts of chemicals, which will eventually collect salts.
Vegetables in a garden need to have at least six hours of sun every day in order to thrive. Most members of the vegetable family need this minimum of light for proper growth. This is the same for many varieties of flowers.
Consider adding coffee grounds to your soil if it contains high levels of alkaline. This is a simple way to replenish your soil with acid. This solution will make the vegetables you grow healthier and more flavorful.
Invest in a quality wheelbarrow and a kneeling stool if horticulture work is going to happen often. Get a portable stool if you want to garden comfortably without damaging your knees. Also having a garden usually requires moving heavy dirt and objects, so investing in a wheelbarrow is a very sound investment.
Pest Control
Pest control is tough when you have a veggie garden. The vegetables are intended to be eaten, thus you should refrain from using harsh pesticides and chemicals. So to help you control the pests that may invade your garden, you will want to stay vigilant. Natural pest control depends on the type of soil in your garden and the variety of plants growing there.
Don’t count the fall season out. Fall, though, can still be an interesting time for trees. The autumn season can be one of the best growing seasons and is certainly the most colorful. There are a number of trees that provide exuberant displays of color, such as Dogwood, Beech and Maple. Also, when considering shrubs, try using cotoneaster, hydrangea, or barberry.
Create a focal point in your garden with a unique plant. A focal point, in a strong garden design, will attract eyes and hold them there. The focal point should be a plant totally different from the others around it.
When you water your garden, do it with care. A soaker hose is a great way to water all of the plants at once, and will save you a lot of time. Avoid damage to new plantings by keeping the water on low to move the water slowly through the soaker. Allow the soaker to stay on for a few hours, so your plants can receive water while you tend to other tasks.
Now, you shouldn’t get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you’ll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
