33% OffOrganic gardening is very relaxing and will help you connect with nature. It is a good way to grow healthy fresh foods in an environmentally friendly, chemical-free way. This seems to be easier said than done, though, right? Read on for suggestions on what you will need to start horticulture like a pro.
Climbing Plants
Cover fences and walls with climbing plants. Climbing plants are great for hiding hideous fences and walls, and they usually grow within a season. They also work to cover up old, and possibly dead, vegetation. Sometimes the plants will require being tied to supports, but some climbers will attach themselves naturally. Reliable varieties include clematis, honeysuckle, wisteria, jasmine and climbing roses.
If the soil in your garden has a high concentration of alkaline, try mixing some coffee grounds into your garden’s soil. This is an easy and inexpensive solution to increase the acid content back into the soil. This solution will make the vegetables you grow healthier and more flavorful.
Carefully plan your garden first. Doing so means you can remember where each particular plant is when you start seeing sprouts arise from the earth. A good plan can also help you to place each plant in the area that is most beneficial to them.
As the weather turns colder, it is important to prepare your sensitive shrubs for the change. Cold weather is very hard on these tender shrubs, and potted shrubs should be shielded and protected. Fasten the tops of the canes together, and cover this wigwam loosely with a cloth. In contrast to wrapping the plant with plastic, this method promotes air circulation, which stops the plant from rotting.
Do you like mint, but not how they ruin your garden? Rein in their growth by planting the mint in a large pot or garden container instead. You have the option of planting the container with the plant to keep the roots from taking the garden over.
Take a look at planting berry-producing evergreens in your yard. These year-round berries will give the rest of your yard a much-needed pop of color, especially in the winter. The American Holly, American Cranberrybush, the Winterberry, and the Common Snowberry help provide color during the winter.
If you want the best tasting vegetables, learn about the optimum time to harvest them. For the optimum flavor, be sure to follow the guidelines for planting and picking. Zucchini and baby peas, for example, have the best flavor when harvested early. On the other hand, tomatoes taste best when they are as ripe as possible from the vine. Research the best time to pick your produce.
Do not use broad-spectrum pesticides within your garden. Besides killing the insects you don’t want, this type of pesticide will also kill beneficial insects. Many times good bugs will be more sensitive to harmful pesticides than the ones you are trying to get rid of. If your good bug population goes down, your problem will only get worse. You will need even more pesticides to deal with the problem, and it will never really go away.
Plant with the colors of autumn in mind. It’s not necessary to think this way, however. The fall season is probably the most colorful of the year in terms of foliage. Maple, Beech and Dogwood trees are available in a number of fall colors, varying from bright yellow to rich crimson. Barberry, conaneaster and hydrangea are all wonderful choices in shrubs.
Preparing a plot for planting a perennial garden can be done quickly and without difficulty. Turn over the soil in your garden so it will be soft and easy to plant before spreading wood chips around your garden. After a few weeks, you can then dig into the turf and plant the perennials of your choosing.
Your seeds, once they begin sprouting, don’t need the same amount of warmth as they did before. Sprouting plants can be removed from the heat source. You should also remove plastic films that you had on your containers to keep the humidity and warmth out. Keep an eye on your seeds in order to know when you should do this.
Pine can be a wonderful mulch. Some plants are more acidic, and prefer soil that contains higher acidic levels. If your garden contains plants like this, there are few things simpler than spreading some pine needles across your beds. Cover your beds with the needles, as they will decompose and disperse their acid throughout the soil.
