The vegetable garden is an essential part of any homesteading effort. Without it, we would be at the mercy of the grocery store for our food. We would have to rely on canned goods or perishables shipped from other countries. A vegetable garden allows us to grow our own food and to save money.

I grew up in a small town in central Illinois. There were no farms around. I never saw anyone grow their own vegetables. When I was a teenager, my mother decided that we needed to grow some vegetables. She found a book called “Gardens of Plenty” by Charles Kuralt. It was a how-to book for growing vegetables in small gardens. My mother planted a garden and she started me on a similar path. The book was good but I think it was too basic for us. We didn’t want to spend all day in the garden. We wanted to go outside and play. So we went out and got a dog. We named him Jack and he loved to chase rabbits and squirrels. He was also very good at chasing cats and dogs. We put the garden in the back yard so Jack could run free. That solved the problem of getting him out of the garden. He would chase the birds and bugs that were eating the plants.

The garden was great for us because we could pick fresh vegetables whenever we wanted them. We had fresh lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, potatoes, carrots, squash, zucchini, and peppers. We ate a lot of those vegetables. We even ate some of the flowers and herbs.

We lived in a neighborhood with mostly young families. Most of the houses were occupied by single people. We had neighbors that were divorced or widowed. They were always looking for someone to talk to. One neighbor was a widow. Her husband had died and she was living alone. She had a big garden and invited us over to visit. She was a nice woman and we spent a lot of time with her. We learned a lot about gardening from her.

One thing that she told us was that if you want to keep your garden going year after year, you need to plant a variety of different types of vegetables. She said that there are three main categories of vegetables. You can have one of each type. She said that if you have two of each type, you will have a balanced diet. She said that if you only have one of each type, you won’t get enough of the right vitamins and minerals. She said that if you are planting a garden, you should plant enough of each type to last until the next harvest. If you don’t have enough of one type, you can eat the others.

She taught us how to grow corn. She said that if you plant corn in rows, it will be easier to harvest. She said that if you don’t have time to wait for the corn to grow, you can buy it at the grocery store. She said that corn is easy to grow. She said that you just plant the seeds, water them, and they will grow. She said that you can plant corn in a flower bed or in the garden. She said that you can use corn as a cover crop for your garden. She said that you should plant corn every year. She said that if you can’t plant corn this year, you can still eat it. She said that if you live in a place where the weather is too hot or cold, you can still eat it even if it doesn’t grow. She said that if you eat it, you won’t have to buy it from the store.

She said that if you don’t know how to plant corn, you can ask your local farmer. She said that the farmer knows what kind of seed to plant and when to plant it. She said that the farmer will tell you how many rows to plant and how many seeds to plant in each row. She said that the farmer can help you with everything else. She said that the farmer is like a gardener. She said that the farmer has experience growing corn. She said that the farmer would know which kinds of seeds to plant and when to plant them. She said that the farmer wouldn’t plant corn if he didn’t know how to do it. She said that the farm is like a garden.

We learned how to plant corn from the neighbor’s garden. She told us how to plant corn and she showed us how to do it. After we planted the corn, we went home and harvested it. We took the corn and planted it in the garden. We had a garden full of corn. We ate a lot of corn and we didn’t have to buy it from a store.

The neighbor also gave us a couple of recipes for cooking corn. We made popcorn and we made sweet corn. We made corn bread and we made corn pudding. We made corn soup and we made corn chowder. We ate a lot of the corn that we grew. We didn’t have to buy it.

We also learned how to grow peas. We planted peas in the garden. We harvested the peas and we ate them. We also planted the peas in a flower bed and we ate them. We used the peas in our garden. We made soup with them. We ate them. We didn’t have to pay for them at the grocery store.

We learned how vegetables grow and how to cook them. We learned how to grow them and how to eat them. We learned how to make our own food and how to save money. We learned how to grow our own food. We learned how to be self sufficient.
