When winter arrives, you can save some plants by placing them in your home. You may be able to save your most resistant or expensive plants. Always be careful when digging around the roots, and put the plant in a suitable pot.
Before you plant seeds, pre-soak them for a night somewhere dark. Place some seeds into a small container, then fill it with water until it is almost to the top. This hydrates your seeds and jump-starts their growth. The seeds will be better able to survive and grow up.
When you mow your lawn, do not mow it close to the ground. If you leave a bit more height, the grass roots will get deeper, making your lawn stronger. The shorter the grass, the shallower the roots, which makes the lawn more likely to develop brown patches.
Vegetable plants should be planted where they can benefit from a minimum of six hours of sunlight every day. If you neglect this, it is likely that you will notice slow growth and reduced quality in your vegetables This arrangement will also benefit some types of flowers.
Don’t plant a garden without planning it. Planning gives you a map of your garden. When your plants begin sprouting and all look alike, you can refer to your plan to remind yourself of which plants are which. You are also less likely to lose smaller members of the larger garden in the overall mix.
If you want an organic way to weed your garden, try “boiling” them. Water is cheaper than chemical herbicides, and less hazardous to humans and soil. Make sure to pour only on the weeds and to stay away from healthy vegetation. Boiling water damages weed and plant roots, so be sure to avoid the plants you don’t want to eliminate.
Place organic mulch close to your vegetables. The mulch will keep the soil around the plants moist a little longer. It will also dramatically decrease weed growth. This will save you time, money, and effort in your lovely garden.
If you are new to horticulture, make sure you read and follow all the directions on any tool or chemical you use. If you fail to follow the directions, you expose yourself to safety hazards or a risk of experiencing adverse reactions. Prevent issues, and use your garden chemicals safely.
Think about adding some berry-producing evergreens to your landscaping. The evergreens will add some color to your garden or yard, especially during the winter, when other plants have died or lost color. Some examples include Holly, Snowberry trees, Winterberry and similar plants.
If you can’t wait for a cut to heal before digging in the dirt, then at least protect your cuts from exposure. If dirt and grime get into a cut while gardening, it may become infected. Get a bandage that seals the cut properly.
Make sure you work in your garden every day. Don’t waste time searching for lost tools. Prepare them all ahead of time and have them handy before you need to garden, and then put them back in their place when done. If you need to use a tool belt, try using some pants with pockets in them.
Space is very important when you plant an organic garden. Do not underestimate the space that plants need to develop their root systems. Proper spacing is important not just to accommodate the plants’ sizes but also for air circulation. Think ahead and give each plant room for expansion, by properly spacing the seeds.
Treated Wood
Use untreated stone, brick or wood to build raised beds. If you choose to use wood, see to it that it’s untreated and that it can resist rotting. Cypress, locust and cedar are all very good choices. Do not use treated wood in your vegetable garden. In the event your vegetable garden already has treated wood as part of its enclosure, consider replacing it, or painting it, or wrapping the treated wood in some protective covering. Keep in mind that if any of the untreated wood is below the ground, you should dig it up to make sure that you completely protect your vegetable garden from the chemicals in the treated wood.
