Saving seeds

  In a garden to grow year after year, I think I have accumulated many garden seed packs.  Cross the inventory, I realized that some of my saved seeds go back until 1999.Knowing that the seeds do not last forever, (well, at least most seeds) decided to verify the age of feasibility for some garden seed. If they are too old to germination percentage will be much smaller and save their seeds was a waste of time.

The chart below gives the average age of feasibility of seeds stored under “appropriate conditions” which means that seeds should be kept in a cool, dark place with temperature and humidity.

Seed Storage

If you are saving their own seed, make sure your seeds are completely dry before storing and labelling each packet with a name, date and other notes to the next year. Unlike open pollination seeds (inheritance), seeds of F1 hybrids will not be true to the original plan.
