That is why wise organic gardening tips are important. This will make the fruits and vegetables in your garden healthier and taste better. Read on to learn the basics of managing your organic garden.
Slowly acclimatize your plants to the outside environment to keep from shocking them. Try placing them outside in sunlight for about an hour or maybe two the first day. As you continue the first week of the project, gradually extend the duration of sun exposure. Finally, after about a week, you should be able to move them outside and leave them there for the summer.
Fight pests before you even plant, by getting your soil in shape. The hearty plants that will grow in a garden with rich soil can resist the bugs and diseases that weak plants can’t withstand. Start your garden off with a high-quality soil that you can enrich over time.
Try using climber plants to cover up your fences and walls. Many climbers are so robust that they can cover an unattractive wall or fence in a single growing season. It is possible to get them to grow in conjunction with trees and bushes already on the premises, or train them to drape over arbors. Some climbers you plant will have to be tied off and supported, but others have no problem attaching themselves to any surface using their tendrils or twining stems Excellent varieties include honeysuckle, wisteria, jasmine, climbing roses and clematis.
Set your mower blades higher, so you don’t cut the grass too short. If you leave your grass kind of high, your roots will be deeper and your lawn will be stronger and not dry out. If the grass is too short, it produces shallow roots and that leads to a lawn with brown spots and dried-out patches.
Protect your delicate deciduous shrubs from harsh elements. Cold weather is very hard on these tender shrubs, and potted shrubs should be shielded and protected. Tie the tops together, and loosely cover the wigwam with a blanket or sheet. This tactic is better than utilizing plastic, because it will allow air to circulate.
Irises should be divided. Increase your iris stocks by dividing your overgrown clumps. You can do this by simply picking up bulbous irises once the foliage has withered. The bulbs will naturally split in your hands, and after you replant them, will flower about a year later. Split rhizomes with a knife. Discard the center and cut pieces from the exterior. Divide your pieces carefully; they should each have one good quality offshoot apiece. Replant your cuttings immediately for the best results.
To help them out, try poring leftover water from steamed vegetables on them. For gardenias and rhododendrons, try putting your used coffee grounds or tea bags in the soil so they may acquire the acid they need for proper growth. Some types of plant fungus problems can be solved by sprinkling with chamomile tea.
Broad-spectrum pesticide is not a good garden choice. Broad-spectrum pesticides will kill insects that are helpful to your garden as well as the harmful ones. Since these pesticides often affect the good bugs more than the bad, using them can actually increase your pest problem. If this happens, you just fuel an expanding cycle of needing even more pesticides.
Plan your garden, and plant with fall colors in mind. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to be. If you plan properly, you can make your fall garden the most colorful time of the year. Maple, beech trees or dogwood take on some amazing colors. Add even more color to your garden by planting shrubs such as hydrangea, barberry or cotoneaster.
Try to relax with horticulture. There are a variety of ways to find peace and relaxation on a personal level. Amongst the simplest ways to get there is to start a garden. It does however require a small investment of money but has tremendous returns. Of course the highest return is the peace you will feel from having some time alone in your garden and growing your own plants.
Organic gardening is a great way to improve your diet naturally. It is a good source of fresh vegetables and fruits and can improve your health markedly. It takes a lot of work and tons of patience, but it is all worth it in the end to have a successful organic garden.
