If you want to start a vegetable garden this year, here are some things you should know before you get started.

1. Choose your spot carefully. You will be planting in an area that is protected from the wind and is in full sun. The soil should be rich in organic matter. It should be moist but not wet.

2. Prepare the ground by digging out the weeds and adding compost or manure. A good way to do this is to dig out the plants and compost them. This way you can use the same soil for several years.

3. Plant your seeds in rows about 4 inches apart. For best results, plant the seeds at least 2 inches deep.

4. Water your garden daily with a fine mist of water. Don’t let the soil dry out between waterings.

5. Keep the weeds down by hoeing them regularly. This helps keep the soil rich and helps to prevent disease.

6. Keep your garden weeded and mulched with straw or other organic material. This helps retain moisture and keeps the weeds down.

7. Be sure to harvest your vegetables when they are ripe. Some vegetables, such as corn, will continue to grow even after they are ripe.

8. To avoid pests, keep your garden well watered and free of debris. If you have any aphids, ladybugs or other bugs, it may help to place a little dish of beer in the center of the garden. This will attract the bugs and they will eat the aphids.

9. Use a mulch of leaves or straw around the base of the plants to protect the roots from frost and from weed competition.

10. After harvesting, remove the plant and compost it.

11. Harvest your vegetables frequently. This will help keep the plants growing and will help reduce the time it takes to grow the vegetables.
