Maintain your garden smartly by using efficient methods. While the garden itself is important, your real goal is to grow great tasting produce that is healthy and does no harm to the environment or the consumer. Use the following tips to create a flourishing and very rewarding organic garden.
Your first and best line of defense against pests is having healthy soil. Healthier plants are greater in strength and resistance to illness and insects. So if you want your garden to provide plants that are as healthy as possible, you need a good quality soil that contains few chemicals and that can accumulate salts over time.
Use climbing vines or plants to cover fences and walls. Climbing plants are extremely versatile, helping to hide an ugly fence or wall, often within one growing season. They can be trained to grow over an arbor, or through trees and shrubs that are already in the garden. Some need to be tied to a support, whereas certain climbers attach themselves to a surface with tendrils or twining stems. Honeysuckle and jasmine are very beautiful varieties of such climbers.
You may be able to re-pot some plants to bring indoors for the winter. Perhaps you can save your most expensive or resistant plants. Remember to be gentle when digging up your plants; carefully dig away from the roots and gently place the plant into a container.
Be sure to do some weeding on a regular basis. Unwanted weeds fight for the same nutrients that more desirable plants do, and they also are unsightly. To aid in this venture, you might want to use white vinegar. The acidity of the vinegar is harmful to most plants. A spray solution is much easier to apply than to rid your garden of weeds by hand.
A green garden needs to begin with seeds, not plants. This is a more sustainable way to start a garden. Packaging materials for many plants utilize plastics that are not recyclable, so avoid these containers and choose instead to sow your garden with seeds or utilize organic pots.
Fertilize your garden. Manure is a great garden additive, but it is important that you choose a manure that has been composted commercially so that there is less of a risk of pathogens. The options for fertilizing are vast and include environmentally sound choices, so no matter which you choose, just be sure to use one.
Being a novice gardener, you should ensure that you follow the directions carefully for tool and chemical use. Garden chemicals can cause skin irritation and eye injury. Directions, especially safety rules, are there for your own good, so make sure you follow instructions on your tools and chemicals to the letter.
When you are organic horticulture, ask your children to lend a hand. Horticulture helps your children learn about biological processes and serves as a social activity that helps the family grow closer while eating healthier.
If you have an organic garden and children, plant some everbearing strawberries for them. Children will be more willing to help you if they can pluck their own fruit from the garden.
Aspirin water has disease-prevention properties that can protect plants. Your plants can benefit from a solution you can make by dissolving one and one-half aspirins into a couple of gallons of water. Spray the plants with the aspirin solution to help your plants fight disease. Be sure to repeat this process every two or three weeks.
Plants growing in your home need a constant temperature of no less than 65 degrees. Indoor plants grow best at these warm temperatures. These temperatures may not be comfortable for you, however. As an alternative to keeping your entire home that warm, consider getting heat lamps for your organic plants.
You’ll save time and energy if you keep tools nearby while working in your garden. You have several options including using a bucket to hold your tools or wearing pants with lots of sturdy pockets. If you have your pruning shears, spade, trowel and gloves handy, you will be able to get your gardening chores done much more quickly.
Organic gardening can help you develop an appreciation for the taste and freshness of your food. If you are willing to put in the effort, you will enjoy a wonderful harvest from your own garden.
